Income thresholds for 2025 payments
The 2025 catch-up uses the same phase-out ranges as the original 2021 third-round EIP. Payments reduce by 5% of every dollar of AGI over the full-amount threshold and reach zero at the ceiling.
Who qualifies
- US citizens or resident aliens with a valid Social Security number.
- Filed a 2021 tax return and were within the AGI thresholds above.
- Left the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit field blank or entered $0 despite being eligible.
- Not claimed as a dependent on someone else's 2021 return.
- Recipients of Social Security, SSI, SSDI, Railroad Retirement, or VA benefits automatically qualify if within income limits — no return required.
- $1,400 additional for each qualifying dependent, including adult dependents and college students.
How to check your payment status
The IRS Get My Payment tool has been retired. The only official way to see whether you received a 2024/2025 Recovery Rebate payment is your IRS Online Account.
- Go to irs.gov/account and sign in (ID.me verification required).
- Open Tax Records → Economic Impact Payment Information.
- You will see the amount and date of any EIP issued to you, plus the delivery method (direct deposit or mailed check).
- If a payment shows as issued but you never received it, request a payment trace with IRS Form 3911.
State-level relief payments
Several states have issued their own inflation-relief or tax-rebate checks in 2024 and 2025. These are separate from any federal payment, have their own income thresholds, and are administered by the state revenue department — not the IRS.
- California — Middle Class Tax Refund (final payments issued through 2024).
- Colorado — TABOR refund distributed with 2024 state tax filings.
- New Mexico — Rebate payments tied to 2023 state returns, paid through 2024.
- Minnesota — Direct tax-rebate payments to eligible 2021 filers.
Check your state Department of Revenue for current eligibility rules and payment status.
Watch out for scams
The IRS never texts, emails, or calls asking for bank details to release a stimulus payment. Any message claiming you must "verify" or "unlock" a check is a phishing attempt. The 2025 catch-up payments were fully automatic — no application, no fee, and no personal data request required. Report suspicious messages to phishing@irs.gov.
