What UK law requires on a payslip
Since 6 April 2019 all workers — not just employees — are entitled to an itemised payslip on or before payday. The Employment Rights Act 1996 sets out the minimum content, and the Good Work Plan reforms added hours worked whenever pay varies by time.
- Gross pay (broken down by fixed and variable amounts)
- Variable and fixed deductions — with a running note if consolidated
- Net pay
- Method of payment (BACS, cheque, cash)
- Number of hours where pay varies by hours worked
Tax codes and NI categories
The default 2024/25 tax code is 1257L (Personal Allowance of £12,570). StubGenPro lets you override the code for K-codes, BR, D0, or Scottish/Welsh variants, and it picks the right NI category letter (A, B, C, H, J, M, Z) based on the employee category.
Mortgages, tenancies, and universal credit
UK lenders (Nationwide, Halifax, Santander, HSBC) usually ask for three consecutive payslips plus a P60. Letting agents accept the same. Universal Credit reviews cite payslips as the primary evidence of PAYE income for the last three assessment periods.
